Adding HTML and Images to an IowaPages Web Page

Q: If I embed content from Word or Excel into one of my IowaPages web pages, how do I get the images to appear?
A:

The following is for intermediate to advanced uses with familiarity with HTML experience.

  1. Locate the Microsoft Word or Excel file on your computer and open the file.
  2. Verify the Microsoft Word or Excel file is in final draft.
  3. Click on the File menu and select Save as Web Page command. A Save As dialog box will appear and the Save as type option will be "Web Page."
  4. In Excel only, select the Selection: Sheet option. This will gray-out the Save as type option and rename the file to Page.htm.
  5. In both Microsoft Word and Excel rename the file.
  6. Save the file on your computer so that you can easily locate the new file. (For accessibility I would suggest saving it to your desktop).
  7. Exit/Quit Microsoft Word or Excel.
  8. Locate the new saved file.
  9. Open the saved file in SimpleText on the Macintosh or Notepad on the Windows.
  10. Click on the Edit menu and select Select All command.
  11. Click on the Edit menu and select Copy command.
  12. Log into IowaPages.
  13. Click on the Web Site Builder Login button.
  14. Click on the desired web site name.
  15. Click on Site Add-Ons button at the bottom of the web page.
  16. Locate where you would like to place the link for the download/html web page. Then click on the Add it here button.
  17. In the Site Add-Ons web page, click on the Multimedia tab or Multimedia link.
  18. Click on the Add link under Add Your Own HTML
  19. The Add Your Own HTML web page will appear, click in the text box so that a flashing cursor appears.
  20. Click the Edit menu and select the Paste command.
  21. Click on the Done button.

Special Note: If your Microsoft Word or Excel file had images they should not be visible. Complete the following steps to make the images appear in your IowaPages web page.

  22. In order to display pictures on your web site, you must upload them from your computer to your IowaPages Picture Gallery. You can do this by clicking on the Picture Gallery button from All My Sites web page or as you're selecting a picture to add to your site.
Special Note: Your web site can display .jpg and .gif image files, and these are the two types of pictures that you can upload to the Picture Gallery.
  23. Click the Upload pictures button.
  24. Click the Browse button and locate the new folder on your desktop that should have the images from the Microsoft Word of Excel file select a .gif, .jpeg, or .jpg file to upload.
  25. (Optional) Rename the file.
  26. The name you assign to the file will be displayed in the Picture Gallery. Renaming a file is particularly useful if you're uploading a picture with a file name such as abx00938.jpg. If the file name were uncleharry.jpg, it would be much easier to remember.
Also rename any files that have spaces in their file names--you cannot upload a picture with spaces in its file name.
  27. Repeat steps 2 and 3 in each of the available text boxes to upload up to 10 images at once.
  28. Click the Done button or the Done icon in the toolbar to upload the picture(s).
  29. If you are not at your All My Sites web page click on the All My Sites button.
  30. In the bottom right corner click on the Web Site Tools button.
  31. On the Web Site Tools web page click on the Building Tools link or tab.
  32. On the Advanced tools for building your web page web page click on the File Manager link.
  33. Using a pen/pencil record the folders/directories where your images are stored. For example expand the first folder/directory under the heading File/Directory Name which should be your username. Then click on the sitebuildercontent folder/directory and then on the sitebuilderpictures folder directory. Record the image name and location in the following way:
    sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/imagesname.gif
  34. Now test this location by opening a new web browser window and adding your domain to the above. For example: http://username.aea267.iowapages.org/sitebuildercontent/
    sitebuilderpictures/imagesname.gif
(in the code the address should not have any spaces)
Did the image appear? If not, verify the folder/directory and image file name are correct.
  35. Now access the IowaPages web page that contains the new HTML Site Add-On and click the Edit Site Add-On button.
  36. In the HTML locate all references to images <img scr=" "> and replace the web address with the direct link to your images. For example
    <img scr="http://username.aea267.iowapages.org/sitebuildercontent/
    sitebuilderpictures/imagesname.gif">
(in the code the address should not have any spaces)
  37. Click on the Done button.

District Domain Name

Q. Can we have our original District Domain Name instead of "iowapages.org"?
A.

Here is an example of a DNS entry that will forward a district web page from www.districtname.k12.ia.us to the iowapages.org web server. The sample entry is highlighted in bold in the example. The word districtname should be replaced by the district name and the entry should be placed above the $ORIGIN districtname.k12.ia.us. statement. This statement should work with Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux servers.

$ORIGIN .

Edit Table Error

Q. When I click on the Edit table button I receive an error. How do I fix this error?
A. First check your table to see if you have included a link that points to a web page you created with IowaPages. If so, does the title of the web page include any special characters (e.g., &, $, %, etc.)? (If you do not know the answer to this question, click on the Site Organizer button and locate the web page and click on the "Page Properties" link.) If the answer to this question is "yes," edit the page name and remove the special character(s). If you answered "no," please contact the Development and Design Supervisor by email or at 1-800-542-8375 x7637.
